Jenny Pox wins an 'Indie' from Red Adept -- #1 Horror Novel of 2010

Somehow, Jenny Pox squeaked past books from top horror authors Jack Kilborn and Willie Meikle to win #1 in indie horrorRed Adept is known for being a tough, honest reviewer and a big supporter of indie authors.  This award completely caught me by surprise!

Kilborn is also J.A. Konrath, whose blog is a must-read for indie authors.  Meikle describes himself as a writer of "pulp" science fiction and horror, and what's cooler than that?

2 out of 5 Bewitched Bookworms agree: Jenny Pox makes the 'Best Of' 2010 list(s)!

The Bewitched Bookworms have included me in two of their 'Best of 2010' lists.  See these posts by One Pushy Fox and Heather.  Heather calls Jenny Pox "the best book by an Indie that I read this year," while Pushy laments seeing Sarah Palin rather than Jenny Pox on the NY Times bestseller list.

This makes the fifth or sixth time I've been featured on Bewitched Bookworms this year.  I'm going to have to designate Pushy Fox and Heather the official "#1 Fan of Jenny Pox." Of course, it's an award they'll have to share.  I hope it doesn't lead to a rough custody battle.

I don't have a fancy bronze statuette to give them, but I will send each of them an autographed paperback of Jenny Pox, when I get more paperbacks in a few weeks.

My Blood Approves: a blog on my day off

My Blood Approves: a blog on my day off: "I'm on vacation right now. I'm counting this as a 'pleasure' blog and not a 'work' blog. And also I'm bragging. Why am I bragging you ask? B..."

The above blog post is by Amanda Hocking, who not only writes great paranormal novels, but is an incredibly cool and generous person. I'm still blushing after reading it...

Merry Christmas!

I won't be online much this weekend, but I just wanted to announce that the short story collection Dark Tomorrows is finally available for Kindle! (It will be available on Nook very soon, like maybe today...)

This new collection includes:

"Spectrum" - A highly adaptable alien crashes into a Shoney's in Tennessee.

"The Fortune Teller's Lament" - A psychic finds his life slowly ruined by a coin-operated fortune-telling machine.

"The Officefrau" - A strange invasive species is moving into Dave's office.

"The Fixer" - At first, Norton thought he'd found an accounting error. Now he's spending Christmas Eve with a special security agent from his company, and learning he found much more.

"Bad Code" - Donald lost himself deep inside the company network, and now he's trying to put himself back together.

"The Long Night" - A spaceship crew is taking a few hundred million tons of radioactive waste away from civilized space. But there's another kind of evil inside the cargo bay, and it wants out.

Plus two bonus stories by Amanda Hocking - "The Second Coming of Pippykins" and "Of Shoes and Doom"!

Hollowland by Amanda Hocking

HollowlandHollowland by Amanda Hocking

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read Hollowland yesterday, and it was great, entertaining post-zombie-apocalypse adventure. 19-year-old Remy has to cross a great swath of western America in search of her little brother. Along the way, she joins up with a rock star, passes through a zombie-infested Las Vegas, and at one point they spend the night in a freaky religious compound. Remy notes that only religious fundamentalist survivalist types were really prepared for the collapse of civilization.

I don't think the book ever strayed from Remy's viewpoint. She's a clever and courageous protagonist, tough and sarcastic without being callous towards other. She's mostly callous towards herself.

Hollowland was a fun, fast read. It was the first book I've read by Amanda Hocking, but I'll be back for more.

Jenny Pox gets 5 out of 5 cups at Caffeinated Diva! That's a lot of caffeine.

Kim at Caffeinated Diva won a Jenny Pox ebook in a LibraryThing giveaway.  But it was lucky for me, because she not only loved the book but posted a review on her blog, Amazon, Goodreads, and all over the reading world.  I really like the theme of her blog, probably because coffee is such an important part of my writing time.

Really enjoyed the "Draculas" project...

I've just finished DRACULAS, a project by J.A. Konrath, Blake Crouch, F. Paul Wilson and Jeff Strand.  Four horror novelists collaborated on this story about vampires, with the stated goal of making vampires scary again.

I think they've succeeded!  This is a great, fast read.  The story begins with the discovery of Dracula's skull in Romania.  Though dismissed as a hoax, the skull is purchased by an American billionaire who is close to death himself.  His intention is to become a vampire and gain immortality.

He collapses after stabbing himself with the fangs and is rushed to the emergency room.  The hospital is soon teeming with vampires.  Thanks to a train crash in another part of the state, the hospital is on its own as far as police and National Guard help.

The whole story takes place in one night, making it fast-paced and hard to put down.  It's a great story for anyone who's been missing the evil, monstrous kind of vampire--the kind that actually gives you nightmares.

The main story of Jenny Pox runs from September through Easter, so Jenny's keeping a blog and a Facebook page until then.  Other characters are keeping Facebook pages, too, letting you follow their story as it unfolds.  Between now and Easter, you can interact with the characters of Jenny Pox if you want.  After that, the blogs and pages will be left up as an added element to the story.  Thanks for playing along!

Jenny Pox is back on Kindle :)

After being mysteriously offline for a week, Jenny Pox is now available again on Kindle.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Website upgrade is temporarily complete for now! Jenny Pox has her own blog, too.

I've uploaded a new version of Jenny Pox with hyperlinks to Jenny's blog and Facebook profile, so the Kindle version may be unavailable for a day or two.

If you haven't been by here in a while (and I haven't), I'm working to upgrade my website to make it more useful and interactive. So far I've focused on creating a blog for each book so people can leave comments, etc.  I hope you'll look at the Jenny Pox and Helix pages.  Please share any comments or suggestions on how to improve the site!

Thanks,
Jeff
