Midsummer Dream Fair Day 12: The Craft Table

(For the crafts table today, I invited Melanie from The Silver Branch when I heard about her cruelty-free approach to faery jewelry, using only naturally shed faery wings...)

The Silver Branch

My name is Melanie, and I'm the artist and sole proprietor of The Silver Branch in New Hampshire. The Silver Branch of Celtic mythology was an apple branch the faeries gave to bards which evoked unworldly inspiration and insight into the realm of the faery. Considering that my sculpting ability came quite suddenly and without any prior knowledge of the art form, and the faeries are my greatest muse, I felt the name was truly fitting for my works.

I never set out in life to be a faery obsessed sculptor, but I'm delighted to be one just the same. I work mainly in polymer clay, which takes so well to multiple techniques and fine details. I make a point never to use molds or templates when sculpting my figures, which sets me apart from many other polymer artists out there. I am inspired greatly by nature, as all faery artists tend to be. New Hampshire is home to forests that would make any of Tolkien's elves proud, and I spend a lot of time in them. Most of my sculptures come from inspiration by a found object such as an acorn cap, fish bowl or a feather. While I try to stay away from glitzy and well polished depiction of faeries, I do try to keep my creations whimsical. My “Naturally Shed Faery Wings ©” line of jewelry, for example, is made of wings that were never plucked from the faeries.

Naturally Shed Faery Wings - original to The Silver Branch. These are never plucked, always found after a natural shed has taken place. $12

Gnome in a Bottle - The best way to take a gnome with you while keeping it out of trouble. $15

Custom Pocket Gnomes - Hand sculpted, hand painted and full of good humored mischief. $8

"When Pigs Fly" - Meet Finn and his friend, a stubborn pig called Truffles. Both are completely hand sculpted and free standing. $150

Giveaway!  One randomly selected comment on today's post will win your choice of one pair of Melanie's *naturally shed* fairy wing earrings, which you can see on The Silver Branch Etsy store. (You can also pick a pocket gnome if you prefer!)

Open to U.S. and Canada! The giveaway closes at 11:59 PM (Eastern) this Saturday, and the winner will be announced on Sunday's Prize Booth post!

  9. I would love a pocket gnome! I already have a pair of the naturally shed fairy wing earrings and I love them. I wore them the other day when it was breezy, and they were fluttering - felt like I had a fairy on each side of my face. And they are just gorgeous!

  14. A fellow New Englander!! How I LOVE New Hampshire, and you are 100% right. Fairies are abundant in the forest of NH. I saw them myself while camping in the Lincoln/Woodstock area ;) Love how you use "Naturally Shed Faery Wings" so original, and such beauties, and the gnomes are super cute!

  19. Glad to be sponsoring such fairy friendly processes for jewelry making!! Wouldn't want to endorse those terrible fairy breeding companies where they raise them for their wings then use them for fairy dust afterwards....such injustice in the world of magic!
