Midsummer Dream Fair Day 5: The Kissing Booth

(Courtney Cole, author of Every Last Kiss, visits today...)

The Importance of a First Kiss

By Courtney Cole

I’m guessing that J.L. Bryan asked me to host his Kissing Booth day because I have a book named Every Last Kiss. But, little known fact (only known by my husband, probably): I also love the art of kissing. And I think there’s never too much kissing in fiction. Or non-fiction. Or real-life. So, having me in the Kissing Booth is apropos.

Why is kissing so important? Short answer: Because to me, there is nothing else on the face of the planet that seems so intimate. Even the act of sex seems less intimate than kissing, although I can’t explain why. It just does.

Think about it. Think back to your adolescence or your dating years. Remember the heart-pounding moment when you were getting ready to kiss someone for the first time? It’s super intimate and super important in any relationship. It’s a pivotal time when two people are trusting each other with their emotions and their heart and their…tongues. Ok. Seriously now. It’s a pivotal moment in any relationship when you are basically saying to the other, “I’m into you. Really into you.” And then the relationship takes off.

In my series The Bloodstone Saga, my main character Harmonia is a goddess who is born time and time again into mortal lives with tragic ends. She and her soul mate Cadmus live thousands of lives together- before they are separated each time. I’m going to share their very first kiss with you today—because it is exactly how I think a first kiss should be: An explosion.

Cadmus stared into my face for a while longer and finally spoke again. “You have the most unique color of eyes that I’ve ever seen…such a bright green.”
I nodded. “So I hear.”
You are very, very beautiful,” he added softly. “I’m sure you hear that, as well.”
I shook my head. “No, I don’t have many suitors. Most are afraid of my father.”
Cadmus grinned cockily. “I’m not.”
No?” I asked, somewhat shocked.
He shook his head. “No,” he confirmed.
One more beat passed and he continued.
Can I ask you a question?” he asked, then continued before I had answered. “Would you be offended if I kissed you?”
My breath froze on my lips and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and beating in my fingertips.
Ba-bump.
Ba-bump.
Ba-bump.
No,” I finally managed to eke out.
No, it won’t offend you?” Cadmus asked.
No, it won’t offend me,” I answered.
Bending his head, Cadmus lowered his lips to mine and my entire world exploded in this one moment.
Cadmus tasted like honey and man and his chest was rock-hard beneath my fingers. I knew, right here and now, that I would never want to kiss another man again. He finally pulled away and I felt dizzy as I caught my breath.
Cadmus?” I asked.
Yes?” he looked at me quizzically.
Do it again.”

And that, my friends, is my definition of an awesome first kiss. I will be giving away a signed copy of Every Last Kiss to a random winner. To enter, simply share your first kiss (or first significant kiss) OR your favorite fictional kiss in the comments section below.

  4. Ha, fun! My first kiss happened at a youth camp the summer I turned 15. His name was Kevin. I envisioned something sweet that would cause my lips to buzz and my leg to 'pop'. Alas, it was really slobbery and uncomfortable. I remember rushing back to my cabin, crying! Luckily, things have vastly improved since then.

  5. My first kiss was at a 5th grade party where Spin the Bottle was played. What a memory!

  6. *Blushing* Oh I just knew you would make us share our first kiss! Okay here goes: I was seriously crushing on this guy in high school. So much so that I joined the bowling team (and couldn't bowl worth a damn). Seriously I was the worst player on the team, but I showed up everyday just to be near him because we didn't have any classes together that year. Anywho one day while riding home in coaches car, we were whispering in the backseat, when out of nowhere he leaned back with his head in my lap and whispered "Kiss Me." There were so many emotions swarming around me right then.....fear...shock....temptation. In the end "want" won out, so I leaned forward.....our lips touched....and it was the sweeted kiss EVER! We stayed locked like that until the van stopped. That was my first and I'll never forget it. *sigh*

  7. Love that scene. I too think kissing is just more intimate then sex. It's really so thought provoking. :)
My first kiss was "sweet". I was 13 and a 16 year old who I had a crush on kissed me in such a gentle and tender way that it made me more picky in judging kisses after that.

  12. Smiles in memory * my first real kiss was just this year but I think this ones better
It was when I was at the pool with my best friend Gabriel I had always though he was cute with his really deep tan and green eyes. any way I cant swim really well and as I was walking by the deep end some jerk pushed me in immediately tried to scream and swallowed water into my lungs next thing I know the lifeguard is giving me cpd and I hear Gabriel screaming. On the way home he ignored me when I asked he what's the matter he pulled off and turned to me and said I don't know what I'd do without you then he kissed me. It was like the entire heavens had come to earth and was.on my lips. Gabriel. Pulled back and opened his mouth to say something. Before he could I put my finger to his lips and.
kissed him like this was the first and the last kiss.between lovers like Romeo and Juliet. And next year we were married. It was like I was married to angel.in a way I was.

  14. I'm said to say my first kiss was nothing like the wonderful ones above. It came out of nowhere. I was 14 and hanging out with my friends. This one guy was sitting next to me with his arm over my shoulder and I turned to him to say something and then his tongue was in my mouth. Not really romantic, and I froze cause I REALLY wasn't expecting it.

But I've had lots of other "first" kisses since then that definitely have made up for it. My faves were the ones that you're both a little unsure and it's just a brush of lips against lips. Then it's like you finally found each others lips and realize how good it feels to just close your eyes and let go.

    1. Oops! Anyway - I think any kiss can be somebody's first kiss if they want it to be! I've had my fair share but I'm not sure I've ever had 'THAT' kiss, you know?! haha. I mean, I'm pretty sure my actual first kiss was when I was 12 years old and playing 'spin the bottle'... but I don't count that one.

  16. Hmmm, my first kiss from my husband now was not really that great, LOL! We were both nervous. We had both recently ended bad marriages. I think we were both just scared of what could happen. It was my dog that clued me in on how great he actually was. My dog is a miniature dachshund and she absolutely does not like men. She has tried, or actually has bitten, quite a few. But the first time she met my husband, she jumped into his lap, licked his face, and laid down. I knew he was the one!

  17. My first kiss was with a friend when we were like 11 I think. We both just wanted to do it to get it over with so we wouldn't be so nervous when it happened for real. We were up in a tree lol!! I was a super tomboy and always was climbing trees and hanging out with the boys. It was cute and sweet. It wasn't awkward like you would think it would be. We had been friends forever so we were comfortable with each other.

  18. I think I was about 12 when I had my first kiss. It was on a stinking hot day beside a dusty highway (fancy huh!). I remember as soon as he kissed me I said I had to go home and ran as fast as I could in the opposite direction!

Shortly after that I broke up with him - I was a horrible girl!

  21. So my first kiss was nothing way special, it was actully really awkward. It was the first kiss for both of us and it was just a peck I mean it was cute but I didn't get a heart pounding explosion or anything like that!!!! One of my favorite fictional first kisses is Aria and Perrys first kiss in Under the Never Sky!!!!

  30. My favorite kiss is from the novel Weetzie Bat by Francesca Lia Block. It is the first kiss between the heroine, Weetzie, and her love, My Secret Agent Lover Man, and is described as a kiss "like chocolate when you haven't had chocolate in a year." That would be an amazing kiss!

    Thanks for the great giveaway!

  34. First kiss? WOW! It was so long ago that I don't even remember the very first one. I do however greatly remember my firt kiss from my husband.

We were on our first official date with another couple. Only my second time actually seeing him. The first was when we had met 3 months earlier. We had been talking on the phone frequently as we lived about an hour apart. Anyway.....We met up at our mutual friend's house and had a quick snack and some beer. Then we went out to a local bar. The bar had two parts: the first had a couple of pool tables and dart boards along with the main bar and some tables. The second part was a large dance hall type room with long banquet tables. All 4 of us decided to sit in there as it was quiet and didn't have all the drunks in it. After a few drinks and good conversation, we all decided to leave. I was walking slightly in front of my husband when he grabbed me by the wrist, spun me to face him, and said, "You need a kiss." It was long, hard, and fantastic. I knew right then this was the man for me. MMMM!

  41. My first kiss was the most awkward kiss imaginable...It was with a guy 4 years older than me while I was in his basement. 3 of my friends watched while we kissed and all I could think of was the music video for NSYNC playing in the background...oh first loves :P
