Guest post from Daniel Arenson: Epic Fantasy Music

Today, I'm having Daniel Arenson over for a guest blog to celebrate the release of A Dawn of Dragonfire, the first book in his new Dragonlore series.  This is Daniel's second series about dragons, making him officially "The Dragon Guy" around here.  Check out the book cover:

And now for Daniel's post...

Epic Fantasy Music

Epic fantasy. It's known for its novels, films, and artwork. But what about music? While epic fantasy isn't a musical genre, there's definitely music out there that just sounds like epic fantasy. Here are some pieces of music that, to me, are perfect for reading, writing, or just feeling epic fantasy.

1) Nightwish Every song by Nightwish, a Finnish symphonic metal band, sounds like an epic fantasy novel's soundtrack.
Example: Slaying the Dreamer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKxAPQXR7iU

2) Lord of the Rings soundtracks by Howard Shore.
Of course this makes the list.
Example: Anduril.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOOY1qrRsOI

3) Rhapsody of Fire
Campy, over-the-top fantasy metal. To seal the deal, some of their tracks feature Christopher Lee (Saruman from Lord of the Rings). Hard to get more epic fantasy than that.
Example: Unholy Warcry http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEMeBTmiX4g

4) Dio Dio can make even rainbows sound epic.
Example: Rainbow in the Dark http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQzNBTukO0w

5) Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards album
In 1972, Uriah Heep were among the first bands to sing about fantasy elements.
Example: The Wizard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq8nQOhZ3u8

6) Mozart's Requiem.
There are countless versions out there, many on Youtube alone.
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPlhKP0nZII

7) Requiem for a Tower Featured in the trailer for The Two Towers.
Can makes almost anything in life -- from folding laundry to watering the plants -- feel epic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEOolYYe60k

8) Blind Guardian Another band whose music features fantasy themes.
Example: Nightfall http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pENi46W2rA

9) Led Zeppelin
Fans of Tolkien, Led Zeppelin referenced The Lord of the Rings in several of their songs.
Example: Battle of Nevermore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHJH0ETi8D4

10) Two Steps From Hell
The masters of epic music.
